Grand Canyon 2008, Day 2
Large -- Medium After breaking camp in the morning of day 2, looking west (downriver) from bluffs about 100-200 feet above river elevation.. | |
---|---|
Large -- Medium This is the sandbar that we camped on for night 1 and night 3. Night one campsite is at the bottom (zoomin on next image). | |
Large -- Medium Zoom of campsite. | |
Large -- Medium Looking north (upriver). This is where the Colorado River bends westward to head through the main canyon. But up from here it runs southward. | |
Large -- Medium A giant 1-km-long gravel bar in the river, next to which was some hair-raisingly treacherous trails in cliffs overlooking the river. | |
Large -- Medium The trail went through this pretty red Grand Canyon Supergroup sandstone and shale. |
|
Large -- Medium Nearing the end of the giant gravel bar. | |
Large -- Medium I made it into the day 2 campsite just past noon, and found these boaters here. |

Large -- Medium | |
movie Pan of the campsite, river, beach, and boaters. | |
Large -- Medium The others hiked an additional 6-7 miles out to the Little Colorado River confluence, and then back again. I wasn't up to it, so I stayed here on the beach. I set up this little shelter from the sun to stay cool and not get sunburned. | |
Large -- Medium Our beach sandbar as the sun went down. This wasn't sunset, really, though -- the sun goes behind the cliff walls early. | |
Large -- Medium Looking North from the campsite. | |
Large -- Medium The Sun is just below the cliffs there. | |
Large -- Medium Great illumination on the Coconino Sandstone clifftops in the evening. I miss skies being this blue. |
