In imitation of the LPL Canyonlands field trip, Xander and I drove into the backlands of Canyonlands National Park on 4-wheel drive roads. The elephant hill road is SERIOUS driving, as you'll see below.

DSCN0145.JPG BIG Its not too bad, yet.
DSCN0146.JPG BIG We acquired an audience at two points on elephant hill, this is the first one.
DSCN0147.JPG BIG Here's Xander trying to get up one of the harder sections, he ended up using the parking brake in 4WD-low, but the nose-up attitude triggered the seat-belt restraint such that it was a challenge to lean forward and release it.
DSCN0148.JPG BIG Xander standing on the hard stretch. Although it may look like the road comes into this frame from the left, I assure you that Alexander is standing on it, there's only Permian sandstone to the left.
DSCN0149.JPG BIG This was the hard part. Getting up this two-foot 60-degree slope of slippery rock was troublesome.

DSCN0155.JPG BIG Xander's Explorer at the top of Elephant Hill!
DSCN0156.JPG BIG You know its good when there has to be a sign assuring you that yes, this IS the road down. Really.
DSCN0157.JPG BIG About to head down.
DSCN0158.JPG BIG I had to make him stop dead to take these pictures as I was directing where to put his wheels.
DSCN0159.JPG BIG Nose-down attitude on the way down.
DSCN0163.JPG BIG Xander in the position analogous to me on the LPL trip.
